Many couples think they have to travel far to have their dream elopement ceremony. They want pretty overlooks, a private ceremony in a forest, or an elopement by the lake. I’ve put together this helpful guide to assist in planning your dream Minnesota elopement!

Eloping in Minnesota is a great option for couples who want a more private experience without navigating large crowds at popular national park destinations.
- North Shore of Lake Superior: Consider eloping at locations like Tettegouche State Park or Gooseberry Falls for the beautiful views. Say “I Do” with the backdrop of cliffs and the sound of waves crashing against the shoreline. For true beachfront vibes, located near Silver Bay, Black Beach is a popular location for elopements as well. You can also incorporate adventure into your day with activities like kayaking, hiking, or having a bonfire on the beach!
- Lutsen Mountains: If a mountain-like setting is more your vibe, Lutsen offers gorgeous overlooks, especially in the fall when the leaves turn golden and red. I think that Minnesota in the fall is just such a beautiful time. You can even take a gondola ride up Moose Mountain for panoramic views before saying your vows. Talk about a unique elopement day!
- Waterfalls: Minnesota is full of beautiful waterfalls, many of which are within driving distance of the Twin Cities. Minneahaha Falls is a popular location for couples who want to elope somewhere beautiful while also having access to the many restaurants and activities the city has to offer.

You are 100% allowed to be flexible in the timeline of your elopement day, and you can personalize it however you want! Here are a few tips to get you started:
- Find an Officiant: In Minnesota, a legally recognized officiant is required to perform your marriage ceremony. While you and your partner cannot self-officiate, you can choose someone meaningful to you, such as a friend, family member, or professional officiant, to make your elopement personal.
- Write Your Own Vows: One of the most beautiful aspects of eloping is the privacy of the moment. You’re not standing in front of a crowd, performing for guests, or worrying about traditions that don’t resonate with you. Instead, you’re fully present with your partner, exchanging vows in a private setting. Writing your own vows makes the experience even more meaningful because it strips away all the traditional expectations and allows you to speak straight to your partner. There’s no pressure to follow a script or keep them short for the sake of a ceremony timeline.
- Include Objects/Details/Notes that are unique to you as a Couple: Include elements that reflect your relationship. Imagine reading a poem that has always reminded you of your partner, or playing a song that takes you back to your first date. Maybe you and your partner always have a cup of coffee together in the morning, so you incorporate time into your elopement day to enjoy a cup of coffee together. These gestures make your elopement feel even more like you.

- Where to Apply: Marriage licenses are issued by county offices. You don’t have to apply in the county where you’re eloping.
- Required Documents: Both parties need valid photo IDs, such as a driver’s license or passport.
- Waiting Period: Minnesota requires a five-day waiting period before the license becomes valid.
- Fee: The application fee varies by county but typically ranges from $90 to $115. Some counties offer a reduced fee if you complete premarital counseling.
- Filing Your License: After your ceremony, your signed marriage certificate must be returned to the county office to be recorded.
