The Ultimate Guide to Eloping in Minnesota

A couple dressed in all black stands on a rocky cliffside overlooking the still blue waters of Lake Superior. The bride wears a black gown with a flowing black veil and holds a moody bouquet, while the groom gently leans in to kiss her. The serene lake stretches to the horizon under a soft, pale sky, with early green leaves framing the left side of the image.

Elopement Planning

Someone once said to me, “why would couples ever elope in Minnesota? Isn’t it just a bunch of corn fields?” That couldn’t be further from the truth. The North Shore of Minnesota is absolutely gorgeous, and I even compare it to the coast of Maine. With over 10,000 lakes, forests, and waterfalls, it’s a state rich in both beauty and variety. Yes, you can really elope here, and I promise corn fields won’t be in the background (unless of course, you’re wanting that).

You want a Minnesota elopement that is intimate, meaningful, and truly YOURS. This day is all about the two of you. No big crowds, no stress, just love and adventure. You want to focus on what really matters to you. From saying “I do” at sunset on the cliffs of the North Shore to exchanging vows by the waves of Lake Superior. No pressure. No rules.

With so many decisions to make, it can feel like a lot is riding on your shoulders. But planning your elopement doesn’t have to cause stress! Here’s How to Choose The Right Elopement Location for You

Minnesota is home to so many beautiful places, it’s no wonder choosing just one can feel overwhelming.

Here are a few key things to consider when narrowing it down:

  • Desired Scenery: Think about what kind of backdrop resonates most with your love story. Do you want to be surrounded by pine trees? Stand at the edge of a cliff at sunrise? Exchange vows next to a waterfall or lake? Your scenery helps set the emotional tone for the day.

Pro Tip: Instead of asking “What’s the most beautiful spot?” try asking “What kind of experience do we want to have?”

  • Accessibility: Consider how adventurous you want to get. Do you prefer an easily walkable trail where guests in nice shoes can tag along? Or are you both envisioning a hidden, off-the-grid spot that requires hiking boots and a little grit? Your comfort level with terrain (and time!) can help you choose the right type of location. 🥾
  • Guest Count: Will it be just the two of you, or are you bringing a small group of your favorite people? Some locations have space for a few chairs and a mini picnic, while others are best suited for intimate moments with just the two of you and nature.
  • Season & Time of Day: Minnesota’s seasons completely transform the landscape. Spring brings wildflowers, summer offers warm weather and longer days, fall paints the trees in a million different colors, and winter covers everything in snow. The time of day matters too, sunrise offers solitude and soft light, while sunset brings warmth and glow.

Still unsure? I help all my couples scout and select their ideal location based on their vision, needs, and what feels most them. I’m here to help guide you every step of the way.

WHEN TO ELOPE IN MINNESOTA: SEASONAL BREAKDOWN

Deciding to elope in Minnesota means choosing a location with distinct seasons, each offering different activities and backdrops for your ceremony. Whether you prefer a ceremony surrounded by the greenery in the spring, a summer elopement alongside the lake, saying your vows under trees filled with the beautiful fall colors, or a cozy cabin winter setting, Minnesota provides options for every preference.

Pro Tip for When to Elope: Consider having your ceremony on a weekday instead of the weekend. Trails and scenic spots are often much quieter, giving you more privacy, and a better chance to enjoy all the beauty without the crowds. It’s the perfect way to make your elopement feel even more intimate and personal.

  • Spring (April–May): Spring in Minnesota is one of my favorite times of the year! The ice slowly thaws, the lakes come to life, and there are so many different wildflowers! Spring brings greenery, longer daylight hours, and warmer temperatures making it an ideal season for outdoor ceremonies.
  • Summer (June–August): Summer in Minnesota offers long days and warm weather, making it an ideal time for an elopement in the forest or by a lake. I love Minnesota summers because they provide the perfect amount of warmth that isn’t humid, but still allow you to enjoy all the water activities the state has to offer! Minnesota summers are unlike anything I’ve experienced, but just make sure to have bug spray on hand! As your elopement guide, I’ll help craft a packing list so you can be prepared for all weather scenarios and not have to worry about forgetting something essential. Even something as small as a hair tie or an umbrella can really save the day!

→🪻Pro Tip for Summer Elopements: Wild lupines begin to bloom along the North Shore in early summer, with peak bloom typically occurring in June and July.

  • Fall (September–October): Autumn in Minnesota is truly so beautiful. I love Minnesota falls because they bring the coziest atmosphere, think flannel layers, thermos coffee, and the sound of leaves crunching underfoot. Time to re-watch Gilmore Girls! It’s a season that invites slower moments and intentional connection. Temperatures can vary quite a bit though, so I’ll help you create a detailed packing list to make sure you’re ready for anything, from chilly mornings to warm afternoons. Even bringing hand warmers or an extra blanket can make a huge difference in the fall!
  • Winter (November–March): While Minnesota winters are cold, I’ve found that for couples who choose to embrace the season, it can provide such a peaceful elopement setting. Imagine cozying up next to your love by a fire in a lodge or an A-frame Airbnb, sipping hot chocolate as you warm up after a winter activity such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice-fishing, ice skating, or hiking. So cozy!

LEGAL REQUIREMENTS TO ELOPE IN MINNESOTA

Making your marriage legal can feel a little daunting, I totally get it! Some couples choose to handle the legal paperwork before their elopement day to keep things simple (which is totally an option!). That said, I’ve put together a helpful guide to walk you through how to make your marriage official, the steps you’ll need to take, and how to feel confident every step of the way.

Here’s what you need to make your marriage official:

  • Marriage License: Apply at any Minnesota county office. No residency requirement.
  • Cost: Around $115 (or $40 with premarital counseling).
  • Waiting Period: None, same day pickup!
  • Officiant: You can hire an ordained officiant, or have a friend get ordained online.
  • Witnesses: You’ll need two witnesses age 16 or older.

First things first, its important to know that Minnesota is not a self-solemnizing state. This means you cannot perform a marriage ceremony just yourself, and you need to have an officiant and witnesses. Finding the right officiant can make your ceremony feel even more meaningful.

Who Can Legally Officiate in Minnesota?

  • Ordained ministers (including online ordinations like Universal Life Church)
  • Judges or court administrators
  • Minnesota officiants registered through a religious organization
  • Friends or family (if they get legally ordained online, it’s free and easy!)

This gives you tons of flexibility to choose someone who truly aligns with your vision, whether that’s a professional officiant or your best friend who’s seen your love story unfold from the beginning.

Pro Tip: You can also do your legal paperwork with a judge before or after your adventure elopement and exchange your personal vows privately, just the two of you. It’s your day, and you get to do it your way.

When Choosing the Right Officiant for You Ask Yourself:

  • Do we want someone spiritual, secular, or somewhere in between?
  • Are we comfortable with a close friend leading the ceremony?
  • Do we want help crafting vows or a personalized script?

I always recommend meeting your officiant ahead of time (virtually or in person) to make sure your values and vibe align. You want someone who feels like a calming, encouraging presence on your day.

LGBTQ+ INCLUSIVE ELOPEMENTS IN MINNESOTA

As a photographer and elopement guide, I want to acknowledge that I’m not an expert on LGBTQ+ identities or experiences. But I am a committed ally, continually learning, unlearning, and doing the work to create safe, affirming, and joyful spaces for every couple I work with.

Your love is valid. Your story is sacred. And it’s an honor to document it with care, respect, and celebration. I’m not just here to help plan logistics, I’m here to create a space where you feel seen, safe, and completely free to show up as your full selves. Minnesota has a vibrant and growing LGBTQ+ community, and many elopement-friendly vendors across the state are queer-owned, affirming, and deeply committed to creating inclusive experiences. If you’ve ever felt unsure about whether a space or vendor is truly welcoming, you’re not alone. I’m here to remove that stress by connecting you with people who will celebrate your day with open hearts, not just open policies.

Choose LGBTQ+ Affirming Vendors

Working with vendors who understand, honor, and celebrate your identity can make all the difference. When reaching out to potential vendors, don’t hesitate to ask:

  • Do you have experience working with LGBTQ+ couples?
  • How do you ensure your services are inclusive and affirming?
  • Can I see examples of diverse couples you’ve worked with?

Pro Tip: Look for vendors who explicitly state their values on their website or social media. Ask yourself, are they using gender-neutral language, or just saying “bride” and “groom?” Language matters, and so does lived experience.

Where to Search for LGBTQ+ Inclusive Wedding Vendors:

Inclusive Ceremony Ideas

Make your day reflect you, and your story. Some ideas that can be especially meaningful:

Personalized Vows: Write vows that reflect your journey, shared values, and hopes for the future. You might include:

  • Acknowledging the path you’ve walked, and the courage or resilience of your story
  • Words of affirmation around chosen family, identity, or freedom
  • A vow to always create space for one another to grow

Honor Family or Chosen Family: Whether you have a large support system or just a few close people, you can:

  • Invite loved ones to share a reading or blessing
  • Have a “circle of love” moment, standing with you during your vows or surrounding you in silence and support
  • Ask guests (or remote loved ones) to write letters that you read aloud or tuck into your vow books

Pro Tip: There are no rules except this: make it yours. If something doesn’t feel aligned, don’t include it. If something speaks to you, go for it, even if it’s unconventional. Eloping is about freedom. Let your ceremony reflect the full beauty of who you are.

Your ceremony is yours, there are no rules, only what feels right.

Creating a Safe and Joy-Filled Space: Safety and comfort matter. Here are a few ways to protect the joy of your day:

  • Set Boundaries Early: If you anticipate challenges with certain guests or family members, it’s okay to limit the invite list or elope just the two of you
  • Have an Ally Crew: Whether it’s your photographer (hi, that’s me!), an officiant, or a trusted friend, surrounding yourself with supportive energy changes everything
  • Communicate with Vendors: Ensure everyone on your team respects your pronouns, identity, and relationship
